Clinical Case

Crohn's Disease Not Controlled by Remsima,
A Record of the Final Step

Beyond drug dependency, a complete recovery to a body that sustains itself

Case of a Patient in Their 20s

Hello. This is HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, which has been researching and treating Crohn's disease since 2007. Today, we share the treatment case of a patient who suffered from recurring flare-ups every month despite using Remsima.

The patient was diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2022, starting with anal fistula symptoms. While symptoms partially improved with Remsima, the patient visited our clinic seeking a fundamental solution due to recurring pain and bloody stools whenever the drug's effect wore off.

Initial Status

Condition at Time of Visit

  • Medication: Remsima self-injection, Pentasa, and Azaprine in combination
  • Main Symptoms: Monthly recurring flare-ups, abdominal pain, bloody stools, indigestion
  • Inflammation Markers: Calprotectin level recorded at 174 despite using Remsima
Insight

Why do symptoms worsen even with injections?

Remsima, a biological agent, is a drug that blocks inflammatory signals. However, the "fundamental imbalance" that causes our immune system to mistake the intestines for an enemy remains. This is why inflammation returns when the drug's effect fades. True treatment lies in correcting the imbalance of the immune system, going beyond just cutting off the communication.

Treatment Progress

A record of overcoming flare-ups and gradually reducing Western medications through prescriptions from HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic.

May ~ Sep 2024
Start of Treatment and Cessation of Western Medicine

After starting prescriptions focused on the upper digestive tract, the May test showed a normalization of calprotectin to 4.8 points. Subsequently, Remsima injections were discontinued after the final dose on September 13, 2024.

Aug 2026
Complete Treatment Termination

Although there was an increase in levels mid-treatment due to a pause, steady follow-up treatment led to a full recovery with a calprotectin level below 0.01 by August 2026. The treatment was successfully concluded while maintaining health without any Western medication.

Conclusion

Even if symptoms improve, stopping treatment prematurely can allow small embers to reignite. For a complete recovery, the "final step" of confirming the total normalization of inflammation levels—beyond the disappearance of symptoms—is essential.

At HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, we help you regain your healthy daily life through individualized diagnosis and prescriptions.
