Ulcerative Colitis Treatment Case:
A 1-Year and 5-Month Journey, Endoscopic Normalization

A treatment record that progressed slowly, but in the right direction.

HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic Treatment Case

Hello. We are HanStep Korean Medicine Clinic, treating ulcerative colitis since 2007. Today, we share the final treatment progress of a patient we introduced last January. This patient was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in June 2023, discontinued Western medication due to side effects from 5-ASA agents, and visited our clinic in March 2025 after showing no improvement from treatment at another Korean medicine clinic.

Patient Status

Status at Initial Visit (March 2025)

  • Key Indicators: Calprotectin 322, fecal occult blood 256
  • Physical Condition: Weight 45kg, BMI 17.5 (underweight)
  • Symptoms: One bowel movement per day, mucus in stool, and potential bleeding.

Key Lessons in Treatment

Acknowledging Individual Differences

Some see their numbers drop quickly, while others take more than a year. Direction is more important than speed.

The Importance of Patience

The key to successful treatment is not to become impatient and prematurely change prescriptions when there is little change in values during treatment.

Understanding Rising Values

A rise in values during treatment may reveal new underlying causes. Recovery follows by adjusting the prescription without panic.

Final Result

The patient achieved a fully normal calprotectin level of 15 using only Korean herbal medicine without the help of Western medication. As a result of the final endoscopy conducted on August 27th, we confirmed that all inflammation and bleeding of the intestinal wall had disappeared, and the blood vessels were clearly visible, marking a successful end to the treatment.
